Penguins forward Sidney Crosby has been limited to 17 games this season due to a core muscle injury.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Any hopes of forward Sidney Crosby participating in the Penguins’ three-game Western road trip will not be realized.

Coach Mike Sullivan announced the team’s captain, sidelined since Nov. 9 because of a core muscle injury, will not play for the conclusion the road trip Sunday against the Arizona Coyotes in Gila River Arena.

Sullivan declined to offer any specifics.

“I’m not going to get into how the decision was made or whatever. We’re going to watch Sid. He’s going to go through the rehab process,” Sullivan said. “Part of it is practicing with the team. Part of it isn’t. Then we’re going to try to make decisions as best we can that’s in the best interest of Sid and the team. That’s what we did.”

Crosby has been limited to 17 games this season and has scored 17 points (five goals, 12 assists).

In the 27 games has missed, the team has a 17-6-4 record.

• Goaltender Tristan Jarry is scheduled to start for the Penguins. In 21 games this season, he has a 14-6-1 record along with a 2.04 goals against average and .934 save percentage.

• Penguins defenseman Kris Letang has 399 career assists.

• Penguins defenseman Jack Johnson has 299 career assists.

• One multi-Stanley Cup champion will return to the lineup. Coyotes defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson, a member of the Chicago Blackhawks championships in the 2010s, is scheduled to return to the lineup. He has missed 43 games due to a fractured left fibula.

• The Coyotes are expected to start goaltender Adin Hill. In five game this season, Hill has a 1-1-0 record along with a 2.43 goals against average and .925 save percentage.

• With goaltender Antti Raanta sidelined because of an undisclosed injury, rookie Ivan Prosvetov will serve as the Coyotes’ backup goaltender. Prosvetov never has played an NHL game.
