Pirates pitching coach Oscar Marin talks with pitcher Paul Skenes and catcher Henry Davis on the mound against the Cubs on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2025, at PNC Park.

The Pittsburgh Pirates will not renew the contracts of pitching coach Oscar Marin and third base coach Mike Rabelo, according to a league source.

In addition, assistant pitching coach Brent Strom is retiring. Additional support staff moves could be coming, according to a source.

The coaching staff decisions come a day after the organization announced a contract extension for manager Don Kelly and confirmed that general manager Ben Cherington and president Travis Williams will return next season.

The Pirates finished with a record of 71-91 and in last place in the NL Central but had success with the pitching staff for most of the season, ranking seventh in MLB and third in the national league in team ERA (3.76).

Marin, 42, joined the Pirates before the 2020 season after coaching in the Rangers’ and Mariners’ minor league systems.

Rabelo, 45, also joined the Pirates ahead of the 2020 season. He stepped into the third-base coach role for the 2022 season.

Strom, 76, spent just one season with the Pirates after serving as a pitching coach with the Diamondbacks, Royals and Astros.

In addition to hiring a new pitching coach and third base coach, Kelly also will need to fill the vacant bench coach position that he held before replacing Derek Shelton as manager May 8.
