Spate of fall Pittsburgh weddings forces Broncos to improvise hotel stay for visit
If you’ve ever had a wedding alter travel plans, you aren’t alone. NFL teams visiting Pittsburgh are this year, too.
The Denver Broncos are traveling later Saturday than they typically do for their Sunday away games, and coach Vic Fangio said other teams have done the same when playing at the Pittsburgh Steelers this season.
The reason? A spate of autumn weddings in the Burgh.
“Due to the pandemic, a lot of weddings were canceled last year, and they were rescheduled for this year,” Fangio explained to Denver media Friday. “By the time the NFL schedule came out in early May, a lot of the hotels in Pittsburgh were booked with weddings. We have a hotel, but we don’t have meeting space for Saturday night. I think there are one or two other teams going into Pittsburgh that have come across the same problem.”
The Steelers typical travel schedule for Sunday games is to take a 3 p.m. chartered flight. It is routine for teams to meet en masse the night before games at a team hotel.
The Westin Convention Center, Renaissance Pittsburgh and Omni William Penn are often-used hotels for sports teams playing games in the city.
