Franklin Regional graduate Spencer Lee will represent his country at the Senior World Championships in September in Crotia.
Lee swept a best-of-three series from Penn State’s Luke Lilledahl at Final X on Saturday in Newark, N.J., earning the 57-kilogram spot for Team USA.
The University of Iowa graduate and Olympic silver medalists had little trouble with Lilledahl, winning the first match 7-2 and the second match 6-0.
Still, Lee wasn’t entirely pleased with his effort because his matches lacked the excitement that he always tries to create.
“They should have called me for passivity in both matches,” Lee said. “I didn’t do literally anything in both second periods. Got a lead, didn’t do anything. Pretty bad showing for someone, I keep preaching that I score points and then I don’t score points, so maybe I should stop preaching because I’m not doing it.
Other wrestlers who earned a spot on the U.S. freestyle team for worlds were Real Woods of Michigan (65 kg), PJ Duke of Penn State (70 kg), David Carr of Iowa State (74 kg), Levi Haines of Penn State (79 kg), Zahid Valencia of Arizona State (86 kg), Trent Hidlay of North Carolina State (92 kg), Kyle Snyder of Ohio State (97 kg) and Wyatt Hendrickson of Oklahoma State (125 kg).
