Former Jeannette football standout Gio Vonne Sanders left the Pitt wrestling team to pursue college football at Lackawanna College in Scranton.

Jeannette product Gio Vonne Sanders is making a fast impact for the St. Francis (Pa.) football team.

Sanders, a linebacker, was named Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Week after a two-interception game Saturday against Merrimack.

The Red Flash won, 42-14, to move to 2-1.

Sanders, a redshirt sophomore, added three tackles in the victory and is now third in the team with 15 stops.

A former quarterback at Jeannette, Sanders left the Pitt wrestling program to join St. Francis because he said he missed playing football.

But wait there's more! @giovonne1 earns NEC Defensive Player of the Week after becoming the first player to pick off two passes in a game since @jalen_wells27 in 2017 pic.twitter.com/hOi40FIgfB
