Steelers 2-a-days: Great expectations for Devin Bush; Kameron Canaday aims to keep gig
Editor’s note: From now until the first practice of training camp at Saint Vincent College, the Trib will be running through the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 90-man roster, assessing each player’s outlook for the 2019 season. The breakdown will go through the roster in mostly-alphabetical order, (at least) two per day, between June 14 and July 26.
ILB DEVIN BUSH
Experience: Rookie
Contract status: $3.43 million cap hit in 2019, signed through 2022 with team option for 2023
2019 outlook: Has there been a more anticipated rookie for the Steelers over the past 15 years? One could argue that even the rookie of 15 years ago — Ben Roethlisberger — wasn’t as eagerly awaited as Bush because he didn’t figure to play in that season’s opener. Bush is expected to start immediately. The only questions are about just how extensive a role he will have in the defense immediately. Will he be an every-down player? Come off the field in certain packages? Will he play more in coverage on passing downs, or will the Steelers make his priority run defense? Seemingly, Bush can do it all.

LS KAMERON CANADAY
Experience: 4th season
Contract status: $720,00 cap hit in 2019, unrestricted free agent after the season
2019 outlook: Canaday in 2017 pulled off one of the bigger training-camp upsets in recent memory when he beat out Colin Holba — whom the Steelers had invested a draft pick in months earlier — to be the team’s long snapper. He’s remained largely anonymous since, which is probably the best thing one can say about the snapper. Still, does he have any culpability for kicker Chris Boswell’s struggles last season? Sounds like a stretch, and probably not. But placekicking is a three-man unit (along with the holder). Canaday’s job is safe — his competition in camp comes from undrafted rookie Travis Wood, who is concentrating much more on tight end.
