Steelers’ Chris Boswell kicks with free agent Matthew Wright during OTAs May 29, 2019 at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.

Editor’s note: From now until the first practice of training camp at Saint Vincent College, the Trib will be running through the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 90-man roster, assessing each player’s outlook for the 2019 season. The breakdown will go through the roster in mostly-alphabetical order, (at least) two per day, between June 14 and July 26.

TE/LS TREVOR WOOD

Experience: Rookie

Contract status: $497,333 cap hit in 2019, under contractual control for four accrued seasons

2019 outlook: One of only two players on the team with a “slash” (two positions) listed on the official roster, Wood’s focus is at tight end after a college career at Arizona (2014-17) and Texas A&M (2018) in which he caught 11 passes for 80 yards. He has a shot, though, of making the team because there are so few tight ends with NFL experience on the team. The long-snapper versatility in all likelihood won’t come into play in his bid to make the roster, but it can’t hurt.

K MATTHEW WRIGHT

Experience: Rookie

Contract status: $496,666 cap hit in 2019, under contractual control for four accrued seasons

2019 outlook: Signed by the Steelers immediately after the draft, Wright was handpicked to compete with Boswell. The team even cut the incumbent, Matt McCrane, who had performed admirably in the regular-season finale after acquiring Wright. He made 77.4% of his field goals and 98.5% of his extra points over three seasons at UCF. Wright’s chances of making the team are probably more dependent on Boswell kicking poorly over the preseason than on Wright kicking well. But, of course, kicking well can at least help him gain notice from other teams.
