P CAMERON JOHNSTON

Experience/age: Eighth year, 33 years old

Contract status: $3,458,333 cap hit in 2025, signed through 2026.

The past: Johnston was supposed to be the answer for the team’s punting woes following three below average seasons by Pressley Harvin III.

Johnston came to the Steelers following three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and three more with the Houston Texans. He became regarded as one of the NFL’s top punters, and the Steelers signed him to a three-year, $9 million contract in the 2024 free agency period.

Johnston’s initial season with the Steelers lasted less than four quarters. An Atlanta Falcons player landed on Johnston’s knee while trying to block a punt late in the season opener, and the punter’s season was over.

The Steelers signed Corliss Waitman for the remainder of the season, and Waitman will provide competition in training camp.

2025 outlook: Johnston was a full participant at offseason voluntary workouts and mandatory minicamp, displaying no issues with his punting. Provided he is healthy, he will serve as the team’s punter in 2025. He would cost the Steelers more than $1.9 million in dead cap space should he be cut.

For the Steelers to keep Waitman, Johnston would have to show he’s not fully recovered from his leg injury, and the veteran has given no indication that he’s bothered by any issues with his leg.
