Steelers A to Z: WR Scotty Miller looking for spot in crowded position group
Editor’s note: From now until reporting day to training camp at Saint Vincent College, TribLive is running through the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 90-man roster, looking at each player and assessing his outlook for the 2025 season. The breakdown will run in alphabetical order with at least two players each day between June 12 and July 23. Contract data courtesy spotrac.com.
WR SCOTTY MILLER
Experience/age: Seventh season, turns 28 on July 31
Contract status: $1,197,500 cap hit if he makes the team, will be an unrestricted free agent in 2026
The past: Miller’s status with the organization seemed to take a hit at the end of the season when he was released and then re-signed to the practice squad, a paper move designed to clear another roster spot for the playoffs.
Miller was elevated to the active roster for the playoff game at Baltimore, but he was a healthy scratch as the Steelers dressed five other receivers for the game. Still, the Steelers saw enough of Miller in his first season with the team that they brought him back on a one-year contract early in free agency.
Miller appeared in 13 games and started the December regular-season rematch in Baltimore against the Ravens. Targeted just nine times, he had five receptions for 69 yards. He played just 25% of the offensive snaps last season, losing playing time to Ben Skowronek, Van Jefferson and – late in the season – Mike Williams.
Miller earned a Super Bowl ring in 2020 with Tampa Bay when he was catching passes from Tom Brady. That was his second year in the NFL, and the 5-foot-9 receiver had 33 catches for 501 yards and three touchowns — all career highs.
Miller spent two more years in Tampa before joining Arthur Smith in Atlanta for the 2023 season. When Smith was hired by the Steelers as offensive coordinator, Miller followed him to Pittsburgh.
2025 outlook: Miller has some financial incentive for making the initial 53-man roster. As part of his one-year contract, he will get a $167,500 roster bonus if he is on the team for Week 1.
Miller, though, has his work cut out for him amid the changing offensive landscape. DK Metcalf and Calvin Austin are two of the starters. Former third-round pick Roman Wilson is healthy. Robert Woods, another free-agent signing, could make the team, and the Steelers added tight end Jonnu Smith, who can be used as a receiver, in a June trade. Skowronek re-signed with the Steelers on a two-year deal, giving him an edge in any roster competition.
In training camp and the preseason, Miller will get the chance to catch passes from another Hall of Fame quarterback in Aaron Rodgers. How much of a rapport he establishes with Rodgers will go a long way in determining if Miller sticks with the Steelers when roster cuts are made.
