One of the question marks for the Pittsburgh Steelers heading into training camp was depth at safety behind starters Minkah Fitzpatrick and Terrell Edmunds.
Curtis Riley will get a chance to erase such concerns.
Riley, a journeyman safety, signed a one-year contract with the Steelers on Monday.
Riley, 28, spent three seasons with the Tennessee Titans and one apiece with the New York Giants and Oakland Raiders.
Riley started all 16 games for the Giants in 2018 and intercepted four passes. He moved onto Oakland last year and made three starts while playing in all 16 games. He did not have an interception.
Riley played at Fresno State and went undrafted in 2015 before signing with Tennessee.
The Steelers entered camp with Jordan Dangerfield, who is primarily a special teams player, Marcus Allen and rookie Antoine Brooks as the top backup safeties.
While Riley was added to the roster, the Steelers activated cornerback Arrion Springs from the reserve/covid-19 list and waived him. Springs was one of four players on the reserve/covid-19 list. The others are running back Jaylen Samuels, wide receiver James Washington and cornerback Justin Layne.
Springs, who played in college at Oregon, was one of the players the Steelers signed after the XFL released players from their contracts in the spring. Springs played for the Los Angeles Wildcats before the league stopped play after the spread of coronavirus.
