Steelers add former CFL WR and young LB to roster on futures contracts
A 22-year-old linebacker and a journeyman 26-year-old wide receiver are the latest players the Pittsburgh Steelers signed to futures contracts on Friday.
The new additions are linebacker Tegray Scales, a first-year linebacker who spent the final two weeks of the 2018 season on the Indianapolis Colts practice squad, and wide receiver Diontae Spencer, who spent the past four seasons in the Canadian Football League.
Scales, 6-foot, 230 pounds, was released by the Colts on Dec. 31. He spent four years at Indiana, then was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Los Angeles Rams. After he was cut in training camp, Scales signed with the Colts.
Spencer, 5-8, 163 pounds, wrapped up his second season with the Ottawa Redblacks in November. He was named a CFL All-Star after catching 81 passes for 1,007 yards and adding 849 punt and 815 kickoff return yardage. In an Oct. 2017 game against Hamilton, he set a CFL single-game record with 496 all-purpose yards.
Spencer spent his first two CFL seasons with the Toronto Argonauts.
Spencer attended McNeese Stadium and he was briefly on the St. Louis Rams’ roster in July 2014.
