Steelers donate $100,000 to United Way for coronavirus relief
The Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday announced a $100,000 donation to the local United Way chapter that has established a formal arrangement to assist the Allegheny County Health Department.
The money will assist families impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, according to the Steelers, through the United Way Emergency Basic Needs Fund.
“The United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania has always played a major role in helping our community,” Steelers President Art Rooney II said in a statement released by the team. “During these unprecedented times in our country, we want to make sure those in need have the financial support to rally in our community. We are grateful for the efforts of all the heroes, volunteers and first responders during this crisis, and we hope this donation will assist the United Way in their efforts.”

According to the team release, the ACHD is getting hundreds of calls a day. The United Way’s help for the organization includes:
• Handling calls to provide general information about health questions related to the virus, referring those who need further evaluation to the health department
• Fielding additional call volume for emergency basic needs during the crisis such as food, rent and utility payments
• Providing the latest CDC guidelines and recommendations from local authorities
The NFL has recognized the United Way as an official charity since the late 1970s. The group’s partnership with the Steelers also extends back decades.
