The Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday made official their hiring of Mike Sullivan as quarterbacks coach.

In a release that also announced Chris Morgan as assistant offensive line coach and Matt Tomsho as quality control coach, the Steelers touted Sullivan’s 16 seasons of experience in the NFL. Sullivan was offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2012-13) and New York Giants (2016-17) and has four other seasons of prior work as an NFL quarterbacks coach.

During 11 of Sullivan’s seasons holding one of those two titles, he worked with Eli Manning, one of Ben Roethlisberger’s contemporaries in the famed 2004 draft class of quarterbacks. Manning won Super Bowl MVP awards at the end of the 2007 and 2010 seasons with Sullivan on the Giants’ offensive staff.

The Steelers had a vacancy at quarterbacks coach after promoting Matt Canada to offensive coordinator. For two seasons prior to that, they had no one dedicated solely to the position; Randy Fichtner served as both coordinator and QB coach.

An Army infantry officer who graduated from Ranger, Airborne and Air Assault schools, Sullivan returned to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 2020 to serve as director of recruiting. His most recent NFL job was as quarterbacks coach for the Denver Broncos in 2018.

Morgan spent the past six seasons as offensive line coach for the Atlanta Falcons and the previous six seasons as an assistant o-line coach for three NFL teams.

The Steelers’ former assistant offensive line coach, Adrian Klemm, was promoted to the top OL coach last week. The Steelers fired Shaun Sarrett last month after the completion of a season in which they finished dead last in the NFL in rushing yards.

Tomsho worked as an offensive assistant at Pitt in 2016. He worked a season each under Canada for the Panthers, at LSU and at Maryland while Canada was offensive coordinator and interim coach at each of those stops. This is Tomsho’s first job in the NFL.
