Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Art Rooney II watches warm-ups before a game last season in East Rutherford, N.J. Rooney said Saturday that the NFL/NFLPA agreement reached Friday will facilitate the opening of training camps next week.

Pittsburgh Steelers president Art Rooney II cited “what we believe will be an exciting season on the field” in acknowledging the agreement reached Friday between the NFL and its players union that will facilitate players reporting to begin workouts next week.

“We are excited to come to an agreement with the NFLPA on terms for a return to play for our upcoming training camps around the League,” Rooney said in a statement released by the team Saturday morning. “We are looking forward to having our players report to Heinz Field next week to start the conditioning and acclimation process in order to prepare for on-field action later in August.

“It is great that we can move forward with the agreed upon plans to get ready for what we believe will be an exciting season on the field, while we navigate through these uncertain times off the field.”

The NFLPA executive committee and team player representatives on Friday approved an agreement that broached issues ranging from health and safety to future salary-cap amounts. It allowed for player opt-outs of the 2020 season and established stipends paid to players if the season is canceled because of concerns relating to the coronavirus pandemic.

Preseason games are canceled and on-field, practice-like work won’t begin until mid-August after an 18-day acclimation period.
