Steelers bring back punter Brad Wing, add WR Jalen Camp to practice squad
In a move that provides insurance as Pressley Harvin III deals with a hamstring injury, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed one of their former punters to their practice squad Wednesday.
Brad Wing, who served as the Steelers punter in 2014, joined wide receiver Jalen Camp as additions to the 16-man practice roster. Wing, 32, hasn’t punted in the NFL since 2017 for the New York Giants. But he does have experience since, playing in spring football leagues, most recently the XFL’s San Antonio Brahmas in 2023. The Brahmas were coached by former Steelers star Hines Ward.
Wing won the Steelers punter job during the 2014 training camp. But the following summer, Wing lost out in a camp competition to fellow Aussie Jordan Berry and was dealt to the Giants for a seventh-round pick before the start of the season.
Coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that Harvin likely would be limited during the early portions of the practice week. Although Tomlin did not make it sound as if Harvin would miss Sunday’s game at the Houston Texans, the signing of Wing is an indication that it is at least a possibility.
Harvin was in the Steelers locker room before practice early Wednesday afternoon.
Camp is a veteran of five NFL games — all for the Texans in 2021 and 2022. He has one career catch during the regular season over 86 offensive snaps played. A sixth-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars out of Georgia Tech in 2021, the 6-foot-2, 220-pound Camp was part of Houston’s cuts at the end of their training camp late last month.
Two of the six wide receivers who began the season on the Steelers active roster — Diontae Johnson (hamstring) and Gunner Olszewski (concussion) — are out because of injury.
