The Pittsburgh Steelers continued to stockpile their reserve/future offseason roster by announcing the signings of Trey Edmunds and Jarron Jones late Friday afternoon.
The older brother of Steelers starting safety Terrell Edmunds, Trey Edmunds is a running back by trade who makes his NFL living on special teams. Trey Edmunds ended the season on injured reserve because of a hamstring injury and was waived Tuesday. He was active for four Steelers games this season, registering four special-teams snaps and seven snaps on offense.
Edmunds has played 19 games for the Steelers over the past three seasons after being a core special-teamer for the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted rookie in 2017. Edmunds has 22 carries for 92 yards and six catches for 48 yards in that time, in addition to six special-teams tackles and an interception on a fake punt attempt.
Jones will be 27 in March and has yet to appear in an NFL game. Formerly a defensive tackle at Notre Dame, Jones is now a developmental offensive tackle. Jones has bounced around with six NFL teams, switched sides of the ball and has played as a pro only in preseason and XFL games.
The Steelers will have a new offensive line coach to work with Jones.
In October, Jones was charged with one count each of aggravated assault and strangulation — both felonies — and simple assault, a misdemeanor, in connection with an alleged incident involving a woman.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for that case for next week.
Jones and Edmunds (when healthy) each spent the bulk of this past season on the Steelers’ practice squad. Typically, practice-squad players sign reserve/future deals after their team’s season ends. They are free to sign with any team.
The remaining players from the practice squad as the season ended are some recognizable names: quarterback Devlin Hodges, kicker Matthew Wright, receiver Deon Cain, running back Wendell Smallwood and tight end Charles Jones.
