When Cameron Heyward was presented with the “Chief Award” in 2014, he told assembled reporters in the media room that he would be back up at the podium again at the end of a future season.

Five years later, Heyward proved himself right. The Steelers’ Pro Bowl defensive lineman was named the 2019 winner of the “Chief Award,” presented annually by the local chapter of the Pro Football Writers’ of America to the Steeler that best exemplifies the spirit of cooperation with the media.

Heyward joins Jerome Bettis (three times), Lee Flowers, Alan Faneca and James Farrior as multi-time winners.

A defensive captain in his ninth NFL season, Heyward credits the coaching and support staff at Ohio State for influencing him to be cooperative and respectful with reporters.

“I understand there’s tough questions out there; if I don’t have all the answer, I’ll find out later on and try to revert back to (media),” Heyward said.

“I am just thankful. I went to Ohio State, where talking to the media was a big point and respecting the media and understanding that you can relay your point and get your point across while being respectful and being helpful – and that goes a long way.”

The award is named in honor or Steelers founder Art Rooney Sr.
