Pittsburgh Steelers rookie cornerback Cory Trice Jr. is carted off the field as he went down with a non-contact injury during training-camp practice Tuesday at Saint Vincent College.

Rookie cornerback Cory Trice Jr. left Chuck Noll Field on a motorized cart after suffering an injury to his lower right leg early during Tuesday’s training-camp practice for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Trice went down away from the play during an 11-on-11 drill early during the team portion of practice at Saint Vincent. Tuesday was the first day players wore pads and were permitted to tackle and give full contact.

A seventh-round pick from Purdue, the 6-foot-3 Trice was impressing during summer workouts and early in camp. He and 6-foot-2 second-round pick Joey Porter Jr. teased that they could perhaps be an imposing future starting cornerback duo for the Steelers.

“It’s really tough. I pray for him,” Porter Jr. said of Trice. “I don’t know what it is, but I’m praying for him to get back as fast as possible. You never want to see that happen on the field. I feel for him, definitely It’s a terrible situation.”

After practice, coach Mike Tomlin said he didn’t “have any information on the status of” Trice.

Veteran inside linebacker Elandon Roberts also did not finish practice, but Tomlin indicated it was not a serious ailment.

“Really, it is more of a precaution than anything else,” Tomlin said.

Dad’s watching

Joey Porter Sr. was among the Steelers alumni on hand watching practice from field level Tuesday. The elder Porter played for the Steelers from 1999-2006, and his oldest son was born early during his second Steelers training camp and would have been 6 years old when his father played his final game for the Steelers. Porter Sr. was on the Steelers’ coaching staff from 2014-18, roughly the era when Porter Jr. was in high school.

“I was talking about it with my dad, how I used to sit there and watch a practice and now I am actually doing a practice,” Porter Jr. said. “It’s crazy. It doesn’t feel real that it’s happening, so I am blessed.”
