Steelers cut LB Ulysees Gilbert with injury designation, claim former Jets LB on waivers
Ulysees Gilbert’s latest injury ended up costing the fourth-year linebacker a spot on the Pittsburgh Steelers roster.
The Steelers cut Gilbert on Wednesday with a waived/injured designation, according to the NFL’s transactions page. Gilbert was cut after the Steelers claimed edge rusher Hamilcar Rashed off waivers from the New York Jets.
Gilbert’s first two NFL seasons ended with trips to injured reserve. He remained healthy last season, however, and played in all 17 games. Primarily a special teams player, Gilbert had a career-high 15 tackles on those units, and he recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown in the season opener against Buffalo.
Gilbert appeared in 11 games combined in his first two NFL seasons. He was taken in the sixth round of the 2019 draft from Akron.
Rashed, 24, appeared in one game with the Jets last season. At 6-foot-4, 235 pounds, he will provide depth at outside linebacker. Starter Alex Highsmith and veteran Genard Avery suffered injuries this week and have missed the past two days of practice.
Rashed signed with the Jets last year as an undrafted free agent from Oregon State.
