A safety who came to the aid of an injury-riddled secondary last year was among two players cut Wednesday by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Trenton Thompson, who appeared in six games and started one in 2023, was let go along with wide receiver Denzel Mims.
Thompson, 26, had an interception against the Cincinnati Bengals and totaled three pass breakups before suffering a neck injury in a December game at Indianapolis. He did not play the rest of the season.
Thompson helped bail out a secondary that lost Minkah Fitzpatrick and Keanu Neal to injuries in the second half of the season.
Mims, a second-round pick of the New York Jets in 2020, spent part of last season on the Steelers practice squad, but he was not elevated for any games. Mims signed a reserve/futures contract with the organization in January. He was among a group of veteran receivers competing for a spot to accompany starter George Pickens.
Mims’ top season was as a rookie in 2020 when he caught 23 passes for 357 yards.
