Trey Edmunds during a game playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers last December. Known for his special-teams prowess, Edmunds was elevated from the practice squad to appear in Sunday’s Steelers game against the Philadelphia Eagles. It will be Edmunds’ first game this season and the first time the Steelers have used the new NFL rule allowing for practice-squad usage in games.

Taking advantage of a new rule for the first time, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced Saturday that they are elevating Trey Edmunds from their practice squad to the active roster for Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The new collective bargaining agreement signed this past spring allows teams to deploy up to two players on their practice squad for usage in games. In the past, practice squad players had to be signed to the 53-man roster, requiring another player to be removed from it, and then that player needed to clear waivers in order for the team to move him back to the practice squad.

Now, Edmunds and others like him automatically revert back to the practice squad without having to go through the waivers process.

A running back by trade, Edmunds is known for his special-teams prowess. The Steelers are without two of their “core” special teamers this week because of injury (Derek Watt and Marcus Allen).

Incidentally, Edmunds allows the Steelers to deploy a pair of brothers for every game so far this season: Watt is the older brother of linebacker T.J. Watt, and Trey Edmunds is the older brother of Steelers safety Terrell Edmunds.

Trey Edmunds has appeared in 15 games for the Steelers since they acquired him in 2018. He played in the final 11 games last season, mostly as a core special-teams player though also at running back.
