Coach Mike Tomlin began reshaping his Pittsburgh Steelers staff on offense Monday with the hiring of Alfredo Roberts as tight ends coach.

Roberts, 55, coached the tight ends last season for the Los Angeles Chargers. He also coached the Chargers running backs from 2017-19.

Roberts brings 17 years of NFL experience to the Steelers, coaching at Jacksonville (2003-06), Cleveland (2007-08), Tampa Bay (2009-11) and Indianapolis (2012-15).

In his four seasons with the Colts, Roberts coached Dwayne Allen and Coby Fleener, who, in 2014, became the first set of tight ends to have at least eight touchdown catches in a season.

Roberts replaces James Daniel, 68, who announced his retirement earlier this month.

Tomlin still needs to hire an offensive line coach to replace Shaun Sarrett. On defense, a vacancy remains at defensive backs coach after Tom Bradley’s contract was not renewed. Matt Canada was named offensive coordinator Monday, replacing Randy Fichtner.
