Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph breaks the huddle during practice Thursday, July 28, 2022 at Saint Vincent College.

Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin cautioned against reading too much into individual throws or each practice day when evaluating the quarterbacks jockeying for position to start.

Of course, the daily breakdowns and overanalyzation will happen anyway. And on Day 2 of training camp at Saint Vincent, Mason Rudolph outshined Mitch Trubisky and Kenny Pickett.

Trubisky threw two interceptions, and Pickett followed up throwing an interception on the final play of Wednesday’s practice by throwing one during his first snap Thursday. Meanwhile, Rudolph had the throw of the day Thursday when his toss down the left sideline hit Gunner Olszewski in stride about 35 yards downfield and Olszewski ran it the rest of the way for what would have been approximately a 60-yard touchdown. Olszewski, a veteran punt return specialist, beat second-year defensive back Tre Norwood on the play.

• Trubisky was picked off by a pair of inside linebackers: Devin Bush during “seven shots” on a pass intended for tight end Zach Gentry at the goal line early in practice, then again by Robert Spillane during seven-on-seven play.

• Pickett’s back-to-back interceptions during team drills (23 hours apart) each came by undrafted rookie cornerbacks. Carlins Platel had one on Pickett’s final throw Wednesday, and Chris Steele intercepted Pickett during Pickett’s first 11-on-11 throw Thursday.

• Steele, a rookie from Southern Cal who four years ago was a highly regarded high school recruit, added a pass-breakup later in practice.

• Pickett was left out of the rotation for “seven shots,” which is a 2-point conversion drill. Trubisky took the first four snaps, and Rudolph the final three. The offense scored four times, including three of the four Trubisky snaps: catches by Chase Claypool, Anthony Miller, Gentry and Tyler Vaughns (the latter from Rudolph). Justin Layne had one pass breakup, and Norwood and Ulysees Gilbert III combined to break up a throw intended for Kevin Rader.

• Rudolph was far from perfect Thursday. He had some off-target throws and some that were broken up. Pickett and Trubisky weren’t all bad, either: Trubisky completed six of his first seven in team drills, and he threw what turned into the second long “touchdown” catch-and-run in as many days for rookie Calvin Austin III. Pickett showed mobility and nimble feet in evading pass rushes.

• For the second consecutive day, No. 4 quarterback Chris Oladokun was not given a single rep in a team drill. The rookie seventh-round pick again got work in after practice, taking snaps and a faux “pass rush” from assistant quarterbacks coach David Corley and throwing passes to rookie Tyler Snead.

• Two of the Steelers’ highest-profile players, receiver Diontae Johnson and safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, worked out alone on Field 2 while their teammates went through practice. Fitzpatrick is on the Non-Football Injury list because of his wrist, while Johnson is entering the final year of his contract and in seek of an extension.

• Live punting took place for the first time Thursday, with Olszewski, Miller, Austin, Steven Sims, Vaughns and George Pickens alternating returns of boots by Pressley Harvin III and Cameron Nizialek.
