Steelers interview Texans QB coach Jerrod Johnson for offensive coordinator job
Houston Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson became the second person to interview for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ vacant offensive coordinator position, the team announced Friday.
Johnson, 35, spent an offseason and training camp with the Steelers as their No. 4 quarterback in 2012. He was briefly part of five other NFL teams as a player but never got into a regular-season game.
During his only season with the Texans — and lone season as a head NFL quarterbacks coach — Johnson in 2023 presided over the stellar rookie season for Houston’s C.J. Stroud. Stroud, the presumptive NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year who had 4,108 passing yards, a 23-to-5 touchdown-to-interception ratio and 100.8 passer rating in leading the Texans to the AFC South title.
Before joining the Texans, Johnson was assistant quarterbacks coach with the Minnesota Vikings in 2022 and spent two prior seasons as an offensive quality control coach with the Indianapolis Colts.
As a player, Johnson at one point beat out future Pro Bowl quarterback Ryan Tannehill at Texas A&M and left the school holding many career passing records.
Johnson, who has never been a coordinator at any level, is the second candidate the Steelers announced as having been interviewed, joining Thomas Brown. Brown was the Carolina Panthers’ offensive coordinator last season.
