Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner fumbles a lateral pass during the first quarter of Monday’s season-opening win at the New York Giants. Conner left the game because of an ankle injury but has since returned to practice and will play Sunday at home against the Denver Broncos.

After making it through two consecutive days of practice, running back James Conner was declared a “go” for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ home opener Sunday against the Denver Broncos.

“I keep on getting treatment on it and just keep feeling it out,” Conner said during a video call after practice Friday, “but definitely trending in the right direction.”

Conner left Monday’s season opener during the first half because of an ankle injury. He had an MRI performed on it the following day, showing he avoided significant damage. Conner, who has missed all or part of 17 of the Steelers’ past 21 games because of injury, did not practice Wednesday but has been a full participant in the two sessions since.

“It was just something that it didn’t feel right (Monday),” Conner said. “It hurt when I put pressure on it, I am not exactly sure how it happened. Not an old aggravated injury, no. I am feeling good now. So it’s all good.”

Conner (ankle) joins receivers Diontae Johnson (toe) and JuJu Smith-Schuster (knee) and defensive lineman Stephon Tuitt (Achilles) as those who missed practice time this week but will play Sunday against the Broncos.

Benny Snell had 113 rushing yards filling in for Conner on Monday.
