Shown here while playing during last season’s playoff game in Baltimore, Pittsburgh Steelers safety DeShon Elliott remains out of practice as he continues to recover from a knee injury suffered in the season opener.

The first practice of the week did not provide much optimism that two starting defensive backs will return to the lineup this week for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Safety DeShon Elliott and cornerback Joey Porter Jr. each sat out Wednesday’s practice, according to the league-mandated injury report. Elliott suffered a knee injury and Porter a hamstring ailment during the Sept. 7 season opener that prevented each from playing in this past Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Coach Mike Tomlin on Tuesday termed each as “questionable at best” to be available to play in this coming Sunday’s game at the New England Patriots.

Tomlin had already ruled out outside linebacker Alex Highsmith from playing after Highsmith suffered an ankle injury during the loss to the Seahawks. Inside linebacker Patrick Queen left that game for a short period because of an oblique injury, but he was a full practice participant Wednesday and is well on track to play in New England.

Reserve offensive lineman Max Scharping (knee) was regarded as limited Wednesday.

Rookie defensive lineman Derrick Harmon practiced Wednesday (also limited) for the first time since suffering a knee injury during the preseason finale.
