The Pittsburgh Steelers play their final preseason game Thursday night in Charlotte. Kameron Kelly is a player who probably circled this game on the calendar and said it might be his last chance to make the team.

Now, he’s been so good in training camp and in the preseason games, I wonder if the Steelers are even going to bother playing him all that much.

It sure looks like Kelly has made the team. To the point that he could be a steady contributor in their big nickel package, and he may even become Sean Davis’ top backup. That’s a big deal since safety is a position that carries a massive injury risk.

Kelly is a great story. This is a guy who used to move the Dallas Cowboys’ practice gear as part of a moving company in college. Then he eventually wound up getting a tryout with the Cowboys.

After that, he bounced to the AAF before it folded. Now he’s got another shot at the NFL with the Steelers.

Since coming to Pittsburgh, he’s been a real find. He has probably played his way into a roster spot, barring injury Thursday against the Carolina Panthers.

Kelly joins me on the “Breakfast With Benz” podcast Thursday to talk about why he has been such a good fit. We also discuss why the Steelers defense may be transitioning to using a more flexible approach. And Kelly reflects on how his college experience helped him for this chance in Pittsburgh.
