Steelers make practice squads moves, including releasing Homewood’s Trevon Mathis

With their tight end corps depleted, the position was addressed among two practice-squad moves the Pittsburgh Steelers made Tuesday.

A local product in Woodland Hills High School alumnus Trevon Mathis was one of the casualties. Mathis, who played at the University of Toledo, was signed midway through training camp.

Former Notre Dame tight end Alizé Mack joined cornerback Alexander Myres were the additions to the practice squad.

Mack was a highly-recruited high school prospect who played four seasons at Notre Dame and was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the seventh round. But Mack did not make the Saints’ active roster, and he was released from their practice squad last week.

Myres was an undrafted free agent they signed in April but whom did not participate in training camp because of an illness. A two-year starter at the University of Houston, Myres was considered a possible late-round draft pick. He had a reputation as a hard hitter and good tackler.

Inside linebacker Robert Spillane was also released. Spillane appeared in two games for the Tennessee Titans last season.
