Stats: 1,636 career rushing yards on 239 carries (6.8 average) in 22 games over two seasons.

Hometown: Hyattsville, Md.

McFarland was highly recruited coming out of high school; he was rated the third-best running back nationally by 247 Sports and Rivals and turned down scholarship offers from Alabama, Penn State and Georgia. … McFarland had 298 rushing yards against eventual Big Ten champion Ohio State during a Nov. 17, 2018 game. He had runs of 75, 81, and 52 yards in that game. … The next season against the Buckeyes, McFarland broke an 81-yard carry. … He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.44 seconds at the NFL combine, the fourth-fastest of the 28 running backs who tested. … McFarland missed his senior year of high school at powerhouse DeMatha Catholic because of a broken leg. He also had a high-ankle sprain hindering him last season as a redshirt sophomore. … The NFL’s official website projected him as a sixth-round pick. … He was the 16th-rated running back and No. 153 player overall by ESPN’s Mel Kiper… McFarland was the 12th running back selected in the draft. … The Steelers have taken a running back in the third-through-fifth rounds of each of the past four drafts.
