It’s official: Zach Frazier is returning to game action Sunday. But the Pittsburgh Steelers will have to wait another week for Nick Herbig.
Friday’s injury report did not list a status designation for Frazier, meaning the Steelers starting center is cleared to play in Sunday’s game at the Washington Commanders.
Frazier had missed the past two games because of an ankle injury. He practiced fully all week, as did running back and returner Cordarrelle Patterson. Patterson has missed the past four games because of an ankle injury.
Herbig, Edmunds out
The only players who assuredly will not play in Washington are a pair of reserves in outside linebacker Nick Herbig and safety Terrell Edmunds. Herbig will miss a fourth consecutive game because of a hamstring injury, and Edmunds has not practiced all week for what the team lists as “illness.”
The Steelers over the past week added reinforcements at the position groups of Herbig and Edmunds in outside linebacker Preston Smith (trade from Green Bay) and defensive back Cameron Sutton (return from suspension).
Sutton is expected to play a subpackage role in the defense against the Commanders. Edmunds had been playing as part of the Steelers’ dime package.
IR pair is questionable
A pair of Steelers who remain on injured reserve but who have returned to practice — receiver Ben Skowronek and special-teamer Tyler Matakevich — were given “questionable” designations to play in Washington after each had practiced all week.
For either to play, a roster move would be necessitated to open up room on the active roster.
Also, backup quarterback Justin Fields made it through a full week of practice and will play Sunday despite a hamstring injury that relegated Fields to the “emergency” No. 3 status in the Steelers’ most recent game Oct. 28.
Reserve tight end MyCole Pruitt returned to full practice Friday after missing Thursday’s session because of a knee injury. Pruitt was cleared to play in Washington.
