Steelers notes: Chase Claypool practices, Minkah Fitzpatrick does not but is 'fine'
T.J. Watt wasn’t the only All-Pro absent from drills at Pittsburgh Steelers practice Monday. Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick was a non-participant, watching the second half of the session in street clothes.
“He’s fine,” was coach Mike Tomlin’s two-word response when asked about Fitzpatrick’s status.
Named an AP All-Pro in each of his two seasons with the Steelers, Fitzpatrick made his preseason debut in Saturday’s win against the Detroit Lions. Fitzpatrick played 24 snaps, and there was no indication he suffered any injury.
Rookie Tre Norwood took first-team reps at free safety in Fitzpatrick’s place Monday.
Monday was the Steelers’ first practice back at their UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on the South Side, where they will practice the rest of the season. The Steelers practiced for three weeks at Heinz Field.
Maulet missing
Veteran defensive back Arthur Maulet also did not take part in Monday’s practice. Maulet, in the mix to be the Steelers nickel cornerback, left Saturday’s game because of an ankle injury.
“He could be characterized as day-to-day,” Tomlin said.
The only other noted and confirmed absence from practice Monday was Stephon Tuitt, who was not spotted at all outside at the facility. Tuitt has not taken part in team drills during training camp, and he has been away from the team at times. Tuitt’s brother died this summer in a hit-and-run accident.
Claypool OK
Four days after suffering an ankle injury at the end of practice and two days after sitting out the preseason home opener, wide receiver Chase Claypool was back at practice and taking part in team drills Monday.
