The Pittsburgh Steelers officially filled one of their two remaining practice-squad spots by announcing the signing of running back Wendell Smallwood.
A former star at West Virginia, Smallwood signed with the Steelers at the outset of training camp in late July. The 5-foot-10, 208-pound Smallwood played for Washington last season after spending the first three years of his career with the team that took him with a fifth-round draft choice, the Philadelphia Eagles.
Smallwood was part of Saturday’s camp-ending roster cuts but becomes the 15th player on what will be a 16-player practice squad. The Steelers are expected to sign quarterback Devlin Hodges to take that final spot once Hodges clears waivers.
The Steelers have James Conner, Jaylen Samuels, Benny Snell Jr. and rookie Anthony McFarland on the 53-man roster at running back.
DeCastro aids even while out
Pro Bowl guard David DeCastro missed the final week of camp practices at Heinz Field. With the regular-season practice schedule beginning Monday, the Steelers were not required to provide an injury report.
After practice, first-year interior lineman J.C. Hassenauer was asked what DeCastro is bringing to the team even while not able to practice.
“He’s been still active. He’s been in all the meetings and on the field, so he’s done everything he can to help prepare the team and make sure we are ready to go for Monday night,” Hassenauer said.
The Steelers open their season Sept. 14. Veteran Stefan Wisniewski would be the next man up at right guard if DeCastro cannot play.
Coach Mike Tomlin said last week DeCastro likely would not practice Monday, a “bonus” day of work because of how the schedule works.
