Another day, another significant piece of news involving the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback depth chart.
During a Thursday afternoon appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Steelers general manager Omar Khan said the team was “finishing up an extension” with veteran backup Mitch Trubisky.
“We’re working on that,” Khan said to McAfee, “so that will be done here shortly.”
Trubisky is set to enter the second season of a two-year contract worth more than $14 million signed in March 2022. Under the terms of that deal, he was set to make $8 million in 2023 with a salary-cap hit of $10.625 million.
The new contract, according to NFL Network, extends through the 2025 season and adds $11.4 million in compensation with the ability to make up to $33 million. Khan did not elaborate on the terms of the contract.
The Trubisky news comes a day after the Steelers signed veteran Mason Rudolph to be their third-string quarterback behind starter Kenny Pickett.

“We feel good about our quarterback room, so (extending Trubisky) was an important piece,” Khan said. “Obviously, Kenny Pickett is our starter, and we feel really good about Mitch Trubisky and the role that he’s in, and he feels good about it. And we added Mason Rudolph, so we are really excited about our QB room.”
The No. 2 overall draft pick in 2017, Trubisky went 29-21 as a starter over four seasons with the Chicago Bears. He spent 2021 as a backup to Josh Allen in Buffalo and started the first four games for the Steelers last season until coach Mike Tomlin benched him in favor of Pickett at halftime of Week 4.
Trubisky came on in relief for two other games and started Week 14 at the Carolina Panthers. He was instrumental in victories against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Oct. 16 and against the Panthers on Dec. 18 but threw three interceptions off the bench in a loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Dec. 11.
But aside from those three passes, Trubisky had a completion percentage of better than 75% and accounted for three touchdowns (one rushing) and no other interceptions over his three appearances after losing the starting job.
Though he openly expressed frustration after the game he was benched (Oct. 2 at home against the New York Jets), Trubisky increasingly embraced his role as a mentor behind Pickett, the Steelers’ first-round pick last season.

Trubisky came to the Steelers with a reputation of being a well-liked presence in the locker room, and several teammates and coaches raved about Trubisky’s demeanor during summer practices and training camp.
“We think Mitch has been great,” Khan said during the NFL Combine earlier this spring. “He’s been great to have around, and I look forward to having him around here for a long time, not only this year, but for a long time.”
With 1,119 career rushing yards on a 5.0 per-carry average, Trubisky is mobile enough to thrive in the modern NFL and within the Steelers’ offense. Listed at 6-foot-2, 220 pounds, Trubisky is a near clone size-wise to the 6-3, 220-pound Pickett.
Among only 12 starts as a rookie, Pickett twice was forced out of games because of NFL concussion protocol in addition to the missed start in Carolina.
Trubisky has 11,904 career passing yards and a 86.4 passer rating.
With Trubisky on board for multiple years as a complement to Pickett and Rudolph signed for 2023, the Steelers have one of the most veteran stable of reserve quarterbacks in the NFL. It emulates how they structured their roster during the early portions of Ben Roethlisberger’s career when Charlie Batch was his backup for nine seasons and Byron Leftwich was part of the organization for four.
“I think any young quarterback will tell you that having that veteran presence around them is tremendous,” Khan said previously, “especially if you have a guy like Mitch that handles things so well.”
