Steelers open training camp July 24; afternoon practice times return

After a one-year reprieve, afternoon practices are returning to Pittsburgh Steelers training camp.

This year’s camp at Saint Vincent opens Thursday, July 24, with the first practice on the Unity campus beginning at 1:55 p.m. For decades, the Steelers had mid-afternoon posted start times for camp practices but in 2024 coach Mike Tomlin elected for 10:30 a.m. start times on weekdays.

This year, 1:55 p.m. is when all 14 of the open-to-the-public practices at Saint Vincent will start. The lone camp exception is the annual “Friday Night Lights” practice at Latrobe Memorial Stadium set for 7 p.m. Aug 1.

Including that, the Steelers will practice for 10 of the first 11 days following their July 23 reporting date to Saint Vincent. The team will have scheduled idle days for each of the first two Mondays of camp. They also will be off the days before and after their Aug. 9 preseason opener at the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Public practices Aug. 11-12 will wrap up camp at Saint Vincent, but the team will practice before breaking camp Aug. 13 with campus closed. The Steelers will hold a joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Acrisure Stadium on Aug. 14 in advance of meeting for a preseason game Aug. 16 at Acrisure.

A camp highlight? The scheduled first day in full pads July 29, when the highly anticipated “backs on backers” drills take stage.
