Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker T.J. Watt preps for his repetition in a drill during organized team activities Wednesday at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.

T.J. Watt was on the field in uniform Wednesday for the second day of Pittsburgh Steelers’ organized team activities practices. It was widely reported that the former NFL defensive player of the year was not present Tuesday for Day 1 of the voluntary OTAs.

Watt was photographed by team media and by a Tribune-Review photographer during the early portions of Wednesday’s late-morning workout.

It is not unusual for established, veteran players to miss some or all of the OTAs. The only mandatory practices for NFL teams over the summer prior to the start of training camp is minicamp, which is scheduled June 6-8.

This week is the first of OTAs Phase III — the practice-like portion of the NFL’s spring workout calendar.

Watt is well known for his fanatical training and preparation regimen. The year he won NFL defensive player of the year he did not take part in any team drills through the entirety of OTAs, minicamp and training camp while he and the Steelers ironed out the details of a contract extension.

Pickens shoots for 1,000

A day after Diontae Johnson told reporters his goals for the 2023 season, the Steelers’ other high-profile wide receiver offered his.

“I want to get over 1,000 yards, go to the Pro Bowl (and) I want us to win the Super Bowl,” George Pickens said.

As a rookie last season, Pickens led the Steelers with four receiving touchdowns and had 52 catches for 801 yards.

Of his 2023 goals, five-year veteran Johnson on Tuesday said: “definitely All-Pro, Pro Bowl, over 1,000 yards and 100 catches.”

Johnson and Pickens are well-established as the Steelers’ top two outside wide receivers.
