The Pittsburgh Steelers placed injured linebacker Ryan Shazier on the reserve/physically unable to perform list Monday.
Shazier continues his recovery from a spinal injury suffered during a December 2017 game in Cincinnati. He was paid last season under the fifth-year option of the contract he signed as a first-round pick in 2014, and the Steelers signed Shazier for this season understanding he would not play in 2019.

Monday’s roster move doesn’t affect Shazier’s pay but was procedural to help alleviate the team’s salary-cap crunch.

Shazier has vowed to work to play football again. Last season, he drew rave reviews from teammates and coaches for his input to the team during practices and meetings.
