Steelers Sean Davis did not finish the game against the Seahawks Sunday, Sept. 15, 2019 at Heinz Field.

The Pittsburgh Steelers made room for safety/slot corner Minkah Fitzpatrick on their 53-man roster Tuesday by placing safety Sean Davis on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

The Steelers also added depth to the quarterback position by signing former first-round draft pick Paxton Lynch to the practice squad.

Davis injured his shoulder during the Steelers’ 28-26 loss to Seattle on Sunday. He already had missed the season opener against New England with an ankle contusion. Davis would be eligible to return to practice in six weeks and rejoin the active roster after eight weeks.

The Steelers acquired Fitzpatrick, a 2018 first-round pick, from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a first-round pick next season. The trade also involved a swap of lower-round picks between the teams in the 2020-21 drafts.

Lynch was taken by the Denver Broncos with the No. 26 overall pick in the 2016 draft. He appeared in five games, making four starts, over the next two seasons. In those games, he threw four touchdown passes against four interceptions and had a 61.7 passer rating.

Lynch was not affiliated with a team in 2018 and went to training camp with the Seattle Seahawks this year but was cut Aug. 30.

Devlin Hodges, promoted to the 53-man roster Monday, will back up Mason Rudolph, who became the starter when Ben Roethlisberger was placed on injured reserve with a right elbow injury that will require surgery.
