Shown here during a 2019 preseason game while playing for the Los Angeles Chargers, defensive back Arrion Springs became the first member of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ training camp roster to be added to the NFL’s reserve/covid-19 list. It is not specified if Springs was added because he tested positive himself or if he is under quarantine for being in contact with an individual who has.

Former XFL cornerback Arrion Springs became the first member of the Pittsburgh Steelers roster to be placed on the NFL’s new reserve/covid-19 list.

Springs joined the Steelers in April after he’d played for the Los Angeles Wildcats until the XFL folded in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. A three-year starter at Oregon, the 5-10, 208-pound Springs spent his undrafted rookie 2019 season bouncing around between five NFL organizations. He’d likely be competing for a practice-squad spot during Steelers training camp.

The reserve/covid-19 list came out of the NFL/NFLPA agreement reached last week governing the league’s resumption of play during the pandemic. Players are to be immediately added to the list after either testing positive for covid-19 or after going under quarantine as a result of having been in close contact with an infected person or persons.

Per league policy, teams are not permitted to disclose for which reason a player is added to the list. Teams also are prohibited from commenting on player’s medical status other than referring to roster status.

Some rookies have already reported to the Steelers, but testing is to be conducted on all players Tuesday.
