It’s the first of many “Breakfast With Benz” podcasts from Saint Vincent College over the next three weeks.
Steelers 2019 training camp is underway. Fellow Tribune-Review columnist Kevin Gorman and I talk about the upcoming practices as the Steelers prepare for the season ahead.
The players reported. The first run test is out of the way.
But the big news of Day 1 was that Mike Tomlin got a one-year contract extension. That seemed to be in doubt in the days leading up to the opening of camp.
I always assumed it would happen, and I actually thought it would be longer than one year. Kevin gives his thoughts. Maybe that was a message from management that two years without a playoff victory — and six of eight overall — doesn’t deserve much more security than he got.
We also speculate about potential extensions for Joe Haden, Mike Hilton and Sean Davis.
During his Thursday press conference, Tomlin said Chris Boswell would be tested in practices. We find out how that is going to happen.
I bounce my ideas about the Steelers running game off of Kevin. And he points out an extra benefit to my plan.
Then there’s Eli Rogers’ decision to arrive in a semi-truck. It stole the show on reporting day. But I got the impression that no one else was trying to put on a show in the first place.
Maybe that was part of the plan and Eli didn’t get the memo?
Kevin and discuss all that and more.
