The Steelers’ Cory Trice Jr. is carted off the field as he went down with a non-contact injury during practice Aug. 1, 2023, at Saint Vincent College.

Cornerback Cory Trice’s rookie season is over essentially before it started.

Trice, who hurt his right leg and was removed from the field on a cart Tuesday, was placed on injured reserve Wednesday with what coach Mike Tomlin called a “significant knee injury,” ending his season.

Trice, the team’s seventh-round pick out of Purdue, is a 6-foot-3 cornerback who showed promise in offseason workouts and the early portions of training camp.

Trice was injured in a non-contact drill.

“That’s just unfortunate,” Tomlin said, “but that’s football and life.”

The Steelers also waived/injured undrafted free agent running back Alfonzo Graham, who said he tore his labrum in practice. He has sported a brace on his shoulder since his injury.

Those moves cleared the way for the Steelers to sign safety Trenton Thompson and cornerback Isaiah Dunn on Wednesday.

Thompson was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New York Giants in 2022. He appeared in one game last season and spent the rest of the year on team’s practice squad. He attended San Diego State from 2016-21.

Dunn appeared in 12 games with the New York Jets in 2021 and five with the Seattle Seahawks in 2022. He was placed on the reserve/injured list by Seattle with a hamstring injury and missed the final 11 games of the season.

He played at Oregon State from 2017-20. He also was an undrafted free agent. Both Thompson and Dunn were waived by their teams July 25.
