Steelers rookie Joey Porter Jr. has circled upcoming matchup against Seahawks' DK Metcalf
In first two months as an NFL starting cornerback, Pittsburgh Steelers rookie Joey Porter Jr. has been paired against some of the league’s top wide receivers.
And he has managed to shut down or limit pass catchers such as DeAndre Hopkins, Ja’Marr Chase, Amari Cooper and Tee Higgins.
His biggest matchup — at least in a physical sense — will come Sunday when he expects to shadow Seattle’s DK Metcalf. The 6-foot-4, 235-pound Metcalf arguably is the NFL’s biggest-bodied star receiver.
In his fifth season with the Seahawks, Metcalf has caught 60 passes for 998 yards and eight touchdowns.
“Every matchup I’m ready for,” Porter said Thursday. “But this is the big one that everyone is talking about. I’m not going to lie, I’ve had it circled on my calendar.”
For how long?
“Since it has been on the schedule,” he said.
Porter said the upcoming matchup has been a topic of conversation among his family and friends, and he has seen chatter about it on social media.
The Seahawks also have another skilled receiver in 5-10 Tyler Lockett, but Porter expects to line up frequently across from Metcalf. After all, the Steelers drafted the 6-2 Porter with the first pick of the second round for matchups like these.
“He’s an aggressive guy, he gets physical, and he puts his hands on dudes,” he said. “I’m excited about that. I’ve been looking for that. Everybody says I’m a physical guy, so I’m ready for that matchup.”
Among all cornerbacks, Porter has allowed the third-lowest percentage of receptions this season, and he has the eighth-lowest passer rating in balls thrown to his targeted receiver. He is coming off a game in which he shadowed Higgins on 32 of 40 routes and limited the Bengals receiver to one catch on two targets for 15 yards.
Per Next Gen Stats, Porter has shadowed an opponent’s top receiver in seven of 11 games since Week 7.
