DeAndre Thompkins runs for a touchdown during a 2017 game while playing for Penn State. A wide receiver, Thompkins was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

The Pittsburgh Steelers added a former Penn State wide receiver to their roster for the second time in three days, announcing the signing of DeAndre Thompkins on Sunday.

Tompkins left Penn State tied for fourth in school history with two punt-return touchdowns and 21st in career receiving yards (1,245). The 5-foot-11, 188-pound Thompkins signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent last year but was cut at the end of training camp.

Thompkins was then drafted by the D.C Defenders of the XFL. He had seven catches and a touchdown in four games before that league was shut down because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Thompkins was a teammate of Saeed Blacknall for four years at Penn State. Blacknall was re-signed by the Steelers on Friday. There are now nine receivers on the Steelers roster, and they have signed three over the past 10 days (adding Ray-Ray McCloud on Aug. 21).

The Steelers are down to seven cornerbacks on their 80-man camp roster after releasing Alexander Myres. It is possible they keep as many as six on the active roster, leaving a battle between undrafted free agents James Pierre and Trajan Bandy for that final spot.

There are four Penn State alums on the roster, tied with Michigan and Toledo and trailing only Maryland (five).
