With their most trusted cornerback on the covid list for their playoff opener, the Pittsburgh Steelers added former Penn State cornerback Trevor Williams to help fortify the position.
The team announced the signing of Williams to their practice squad after Wednesday’s practice, releasing long snapper Christian Kuntz off of the practice squad.
Williams was a two-time honorable mention all-Big Ten performer for Penn State from 2012-15, appearing in 49 games and starting for 2½ seasons after moving from wide receiver after his freshman season.
Signed as an undrafted free agent by the then-San Diego Chargers in 2016, Williams started 27 games over three years for that organization before injuries plagued his 2018 and 2019 seasons. Williams appeared in two games in 2019 for the Arizona Cardinals and two games earlier this season for the Philadelphia Eagles before a rib injury led to an injured-reserve designation and, ultimately, Williams’ release.
The 5-foot-11, 191-pound Williams has three interceptions, 23 passes defended and 110 tackles in his NFL career.
Joe Haden was placed on the NFL’s reserve/covid-19 list this past Saturday with an apparent positive test will not be available for the wild-card round playoff game against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. For this season, players on the practice squad under certain conditions are eligible to be “called up” to the active roster for gamedays.
Without Haden, the Steelers use Cameron Sutton as a starter at outside cornerback opposite Steven Nelson and with nickel Mike Hilton, with Justin Layne the No. 4 CB. Undrafted rookie James Pierre is the only other cornerback on the active roster and there were no cornerbacks on the practice squad until Williams’ signing.
Kuntz is an alumnus of Chartiers Valley High School and Duquesne University.
