Steelers sign Jeremy McNichols to add depth at running back
As Pittsburgh Steelers players began descending upon Saint Vincent College for the start of training camp Tuesday morning, the team announced the signing of running back Jeremy McNichols to a one-year contract.
McNichols (5-foot-9, 205 pounds) played for the Titans the past two seasons and spent 2018 with the Colts. He likely will compete for a backup role behind Steelers running back Najee Harris, who finished fourth in the NFL in rushing yards (1,200), tied for 14th in touchdowns (10), first in touches (381) and fourth in yards from scrimmage (1,667) during his rookie season in 2021.
McNichols has amassed 364 yards on 90 carries in 31 games and also has 40 receptions for 295 yards and a score.
He was drafted by Tampa Bay in the fifth round in 2017 after a solid career at Boise State, where he gained 3,205 yards on 571 carries and scored 44 touchdowns.
To make room for McNichols on the 90-man roster, the Steelers released running back Trey Edmunds.
Edmunds was cut after training camp after the 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons but ended up back on the Steelers practice squad each time and eventually the 53-man roster. He played a career-low two games last season.
