James Morgan throws a pass while playing for the New York Jets quarterback during a preseason football game in August. A fourth-round pick of the Jets last year, Morgan was signed to the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad Monday.

The Pittsburgh Steelers added a quarterback to the building Monday, signing former fourth-round pick James Morgan to their practice squad.

Morgan was released off the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad last week after the Panthers brought back Cam Newton. Drafted No. 125 overall by the New York Jets last year, Morgan was beaten out by Mike White in a training-camp competition to help back up rookie Zach Wilson.

Morgan was a 2 ½-year starter in college — from the midway point of his redshirt sophomore year at Bowling Green to a graduate-transfer senior season at Florida International. Morgan, according to his official NFL Draft profile, has elite-level arm strength.

The Steelers could, at very least, use the extra arm during practice with the status of starter Ben Roethlisberger in question. Roethlisberger went on the NFL covid-19 list Saturday and missed Sunday’s tie against the Detroit Lions.

With Josh Dobbs on injured reserve, the only quarterbacks available to the Steelers are Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins.

Defensive tackle Isaiah Mack was released to clear the spot on the practice squad for Morgan.
