The Pittsburgh Steelers announced the signing of undrafted rookie Daryl Porter Jr. on Tuesday, adding a versatile option to their cornerback corps in the wake of a handful of minor injuries at the position.

Porter mostly played in the slot/nickel for the University of Miami last season, though he has plenty of experience at outside cornerback over three seasons with the Hurricanes and while starting his career in 2020-21 at West Virginia.

Porter’s father — also named Daryl — was a sixth-round pick of the Steelers in 1997. Though he did not make the team, the elder Porter played 55 games over five NFL seasons for three teams.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound Porter Jr. was signed by the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent but was released last week.

Steelers cornerbacks Joey Porter Jr. (no relation), Donte Kent and Cory Trice have missed recent training camp practices because of injury. The Steelers open their preseason Saturday at the Jacksonville Jaguars.

To make room on the 90-man camp roster, the Steelers released Kevin Foelsch. A tight end from Division II New Haven, Foelsch was signed last week.
