Mike Tomlin is using the last week of Pittsburgh Steelers training camp as a simulated work week for the regular season.

In a typical in-season week, Wednesday marks the first day to practice the installed game plan. Tomlin put his players through the paces, but not with the New York Giants — the Steelers’ opponent Sept. 14 — in mind.

“We had some more transitional things,” Tomlin said. “We feel like we need additional work between getting the offensive and defensive units off the field and special teams units on the field. That is a big component of preseason football, gaining fluidity in that area.

“We are paying respect to these unusual circumstances by getting additional work in that area in the practice setting. We will continue to do that.”

Rookie running back Anthony McFarland returned to practice after sitting out Monday with an undisclosed injury. Cornerback Cameron Sutton, though, did not finish practice, although Tomlin doesn’t think the injury is “anything significant.”

Continuing to miss practice was guard David DeCastro, who left a scrimmage Friday night with a lower-body injury. Guard/center Stefen Wisniewski also did not practice.

Long snapper Kameron Canaday was limited in practice. Defensive end Chris Wormley (shoulder) was a full practice participant.
