Attendance was perfect for reporting day at Pittsburgh Steelers training camp. It wasn’t quite perfect, though, in regards to full health of the 91-man roster.
Veteran starting left guard Isaac Seumalo opens camp on the non-football injury list, the only player who won’t officially be able to take part in the first practice of camp Thursday at Saint Vincent.
“He’s got a soft tissue injury that could slow him at the early portions of this,” coach Mike Tomlin said Wednesday.
Tomlin did not provide any further specifics on the nature of Seumalo’s injury. He has missed time in recent seasons because of shoulder and pectoral injuries and has frequently taken “veteran’s days off” throughout camp and the season.
A 10-year veteran, Seumalo has more career games of NFL experience (122) than the other four starters on the offensive line combined (70). A Super Bowl champion from his time with the Philadelphia Eagles, Seumalo is in the third and final year of a $24 million contract he signed as a free agent in 2023.
Third-year pro Spencer Anderson opens camp as the first-team left guard. Tomlin said he did not have any timetable for how much time Seumalo might miss.
“Certainly, I’m comfortable with Spence,” Tomlin said. “Isaac didn’t get a lot of work in the spring (during organized team activities and minicamp), and Spence did. Spence has played a lot a ball for us here in recent years, particularly at that position. And so, no real angst in regards to that discussion.”
