Surrounded by educators growing up, Pat Freiermuth found a way to give back to those in the profession.
A fifth-year Pittsburgh Steelers tight end, Freiermuth on Wednesday formally launched the Freiermuth Fund, which according to a release from the Steelers has a goal to provide students and educators with the tools necessary to succeed in the classroom and beyond.
“Growing up,” Freiermuth said Wednesday, “my parents were both teachers. Now, all my aunts, uncles, my brother, my sister-in-law, they’re all teachers. So, being able to give back to the teachers and the community, the schools that need it, it’s really important to me and really important to my family. It’s cool to help out in that way.”

Part of the fund goes to a teacher of the month for western Pennsylvania. The winner will receive $1,000 for classroom supplies in addition to prizes from the Steelers.
“Just being able to give back for people in less need and being able to see the smile on their faces, connecting with them, it means a lot,” Freiermuth said. “It’s something I’m passionate about. It’s been a great past couple of days putting it together.”
