Assuming the coronavirus pandemic allows for it, the stage doesn’t get much bigger for the opening of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2020 season.

The Steelers will play in the shadow of New York City on “Monday Night Football” for their first game of the regular season, ESPN announced Thursday evening. The Steelers-Giants game will kick off at 7:15 p.m. Sept. 14.

It will be the opener of the annual Monday doubleheader.

The Steelers have not played at the Giants since Nov. 2012, a 24-20 win. But they did play at MetLife Stadium in December, a 16-10 loss in Week 16 to the New York Jets.

Over the previous decade, a dominant storyline for Steelers-Giants would have been a matchup of two future Hall of Fame, two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks from the 2004 draft class: Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger. But Manning retired earlier this year.

Roethlisberger, though, is scheduled to make his comeback for that game after missing the final 14 ½ games of the 2019 season because of an elbow injury.

The Steelers also will play Monday night games in Week 15 on Dec. 21 at the Cincinnati Bengals. The Steelers played a December Monday night game in Cincinnati three years ago, the game in which Ryan Shazier suffered a severe neck injury.
